Coigach 2012
- Details
Nearly twenty rowers from our club, made their way 300 miles North to the remote and breathtakingly beautiful peninsular of Coigach for their local rowing regatta on the 19th and 20th May.
Coigach Community Rowing Club offered a very warm welcome to us and fellow skiffies from Anstruther, Cockenzie/ Port Seaton, Loch Broom SC, Portobello, Newhaven and nearby Ulapool. The weather was a vast improvement on last year and despite a tail wind in the earlier races on the Saturday, this eased off and the sun came out in time for lobster mayo rolls at lunch.
The races on Saturday were 1k distance with no turn just in the bay at Achiltibuie. Our friends in Anstruther came in first in the Women’s Open, the Mixed 50+ and the Mixed Under 30s (a composite crew with North Berwick). All the races were exciting and closely fought, with our Ladies 45+ victorious in their category and bringing home finely crafted copper skiff medals. The Coigach Lass was looking splendid and with her crew, set the rowing bar for the weekend winning the Men’s Open, Mixed 35+, Mixed Open, Women’s 35+, Men’s 35+, Men’s 45+ aswell as the 2k race on Sunday to the largest of the Summer Isles, Tanera. This Sunday jaunt took us to the shoreside café there, where we joined our friends and family for more delicious food and hospitality.
Our rower of the weekend had to be Paddy who coxed our 45+ Ladies to victory, came first with Anstruther in the Mixed Under 30s race and piped us over to Tanera on the Sunday…aswell as providing some entertainment on the bus home from the Ceilidh on Saturday night!
Trades Cup 2012
- Details
The local Rugby Club retained NBRC’s Trades Cup on a fantastic evening of rowing off North Berwick Harbour last night. The Trades cup is a community competition open to any local organisation, trade or group, with the crews made up of complete beginners to rowing, but with an experienced coxswain/ coach provided from the rowing club.
The Oval Ball players had seen off a team of Firefighters on their way to the final. They faced a team of Homeworkers in the final, with a handicap system giving the homeworkers a 12 seconds start.. by a coincidence the exact difference between the times the two teams had registered in their heats.
Before that, in the Little Final, the Firefighters overcame a team of Skateboarders from local community project "theSpace", with the Space men using the event to raise funds and warm up for a 10,000 km charity trip to Mongolia.
In the Final the Rugby players were down going into the turn, but managed to pull away from it half a length up, a lead which they extended as they headed for the finish.

Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships
- Details
A phenomenal performance from our own John Irvine at yesterday's Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships. John was pipped into second spot by just 0.1secs in the 50+ event. But his time of 3:08.2 for 1000m was awesome. Try it! Full results here
